Etna and Mythology: The Volcano in Ancient Legends

Mount Etna is not only a natural wonder but also a place of myth and legend. In Greek mythology, the volcano was said to be the forge of Hephaestus, the god of fire and blacksmithing.

According to ancient stories, the giant Typhon, a monstrous figure who challenged Zeus, was trapped beneath Etna after his defeat. His anger and struggle were believed to cause the eruptions and earthquakes. Roman mythology also embraced these tales, seeing Etna as a doorway to the underworld. Poets like Virgil and Ovid wrote about the volcano, blending natural phenomena with divine power. These legends reflect how ancient people tried to explain the unpredictable violence of Etna before the science of volcanology existed. Even today, the myths remain part of Sicilian culture. Visitors often hear local stories connecting eruptions to ancient gods and giants. Etna is not just a geological feature—it is a living symbol of mythology, where history, nature, and imagination meet.
